San Diego is known as a beach town and for good reason – we have some amazing beaches – all which have different settings, vibes, activities and such. Here’s a little breakdown of some of my personal favorite beaches in San Diego in case you’re visiting sometime soon!
Coronado Beach
By far my favorite beach in San Diego. The iconic Hotel del Coronado lives here and is surrounded by a white-sand total gem of a beach. Plenty of spots to hit up happy hour or grab a great dinner at. At the north end of the island is Coronado’s dog beach which is a favorite for those who want to let their pup run off-leash.
Moonlight State Beach
With easy access and a wide sandy beach, Moonlight State Beach in San Diego’s North County is a good spot to surf and there are plenty of facilities here including volleyball and tennis courts, food stands and a playground.
The beach is an easy 5-minute walk from the downtown area of Encinitas. Spend a couple of hours wandering the streets, which are lined with boutique shops, yoga studios and stylish cafes. Of all the San Diego beaches, this feels the most family-oriented.
Windansea Beach
A well-known, yet tucked-away surf spot with strong waves in La Jolla. This isn’t a laid back beach and swimming here is not advised because of the big wave breaks. There are no public restrooms or other facilities and those in the water are skilled surfers only. Be aware that Windansea is a popular destination for wedding ceremonies and photos, particularly because of its historic palm-covered surf shack that can be used as an arch or canopy.
La Jolla Shores
This mile-long sandy stretch of beach is known for being the safest swimming water in the summer months. Although the beach can get very crowded in the summer, the vibe and views are absolutely amazing. The sandy shoreline is perfect for surfing or cooling off with a swim. Although during certain times of the year, you can even swim with leopard sharks – they are friendly but personally, I’m not down with that haha.
La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove may be a tiny beach, but it’s so incredibly gorgeous. Sandwiched between sandstone cliffs, you’ll find blue-green bay views, snorkelers have plenty to explore, and scuba divers can check out some of the most unique sea creatures in California.
Pacific Beach
It doesn’t get much more SoCal than Pacific Beach, or PB as it’s referred to locally. This beach town is filled with laid-back bars and restaurants, along with lots of beach equipment rental shops. The two-mile long beach and the 3.5-mile boardwalk can get crowded but the atmosphere is lively and the people watching is never dull.
Ponto Beach
Hidden in Carlsbad is a small, yet exquisitely beautiful beach known as Ponto Beach. A hot spot amongst San Diego locals, this beach lends itself to surfing, and to being an ideal spot for a family outing. With a smooth, flat shoreline, visibility goes on and on down this stretch of sand, and with water almost as smooth, Ponto Beach provides a safe place for kids to get an ocean experience.
