Flying is probably about the worst thing that ever happened to beauty. The dry air and fluorescent lighting is the farthest thing from flattering. Lately I have been doing a bit of traveling and it got me thinking how flying takes a toll on even the best cared for complexions. The stress of air travel along with altitude & recycled air in a confined space is a recipe for skin problems. With that being said, I thought I’d put together my tips (from an Esthetician’s point of view) on how to keep your skin looking fresh & fabulous while you’re 40,000 feet up in the air.
Let me guess, your biggest problem while traveling is keeping your skin moisturized throughout the journey. That dry recycled cabin air just loves sucking all the moisture out of you, doesn’t it? The night before I am set to leave, I make sure to use a very good & heavy moisturizer on my face. I also make sure to apply a moisturizer before departure. The one I use is Dr. Grandel Supermoist and it works wonders for me. I also carry along my Dr. Grandel Contour Balm eye cream since the skin around my eyes gets extremely dry as well.
As for the body, the morning before your departure and after showering, apply a nice thick lotion all over your body soon after stepping out of the shower. This is so that you lock in the moisture while pores are still open.
Use a good lip balm to protect against cracking & dryness during your flight. You can also rub a little into your cuticles when you need which is a great time saver. Also, you can even use it to smooth over eyebrows as an alternative to brow gel if needed, which if you’ve seen my brows you know I need! My favorite lip balm is Burts Bees.
Don’t wear any! Dry skin only gets more dry on the plane & oily skin just gets oilier. Your best bet is to do without it on the plane! If you can’t bear the thought of walking through the airport without makeup, you can pack some makeup remover wipes in your carry on. After boarding, you can wipe all that makeup off & apply your favorite moisturizer! What I like to do? Moisturize and use Benefit Benetint for all your low maintenance fixes. Benetint is a rose tinted cheep & lip stain and I’ve found its perfect for travel! After my skin is well moisturized I apply Benetint on my cheekbones and lips for a little extra color and rub in. So easy & its almost like you’re wearing nothing.
I know its hard when those carts come around serving any soft drinks you want but if you stay strong & opt for water you are doing your skin a favor. Also, try to pack foods that are not entirely salty like unsalted nuts or dried fruit so you don’t feel puffy & bloated at the end of your flight.
You know when you go to Sephora & get all those perfume samples & don’t know what to do with them? Save them for travel! I hate smelling like strong perfume when I board but I definitely want to smell lovely after I land. I use perfume samples to carry in my purse since they wont get confiscated & just dab a small amount on my wrists when I exit the plane.
