|My hair right after my Keratin Treatment last September.|
After posting my last post on hair care, I was getting a lot of people asking me what a Keratin treatment was so I figured I’d write a post on solely this! I’ve been doing Keratin smoothing treatments on my hair for about a little over a year now.
About a year ago, one of our regular clients came in for a treatment at our salon. Both my mom and I looked at her and could SWEAR she did something different. She looked fabulous. We couldn’t stop staring at her hair asking if she had done some kind color or straightening. It was SO shiny! She proceeded to explaining she did a keratin treatment on her hair. She had us take a feel and it felt like the softest hair ever. I asked her how she got it to look and feel like that for the day and she told me she literally did nothing. Showered and let her hair air dry. I immediately fell in love. Within 20 minutes, I was on the computer googling, researching and trying to find a hair stylist to schedule my appointment.
It was about 2-3 weeks later I went in for the treatment. Not going to lie, it took about 3 hours for the whole process and one of the worst parts of the whole thing is you can’t wash your hair, clip it or tie it up for 3 whole days (EEEEK!). BUT and this is a very big BUT, the end result is so unbelievably amazing it makes having 3 days of icky hair so worth it. Not only does the treatment make your hair look fabulous, it cuts the style time, dry time and makes your life SO much easier! It is quite pricey– most salons charge about $200-250 for the treatment. I use all the Keratin products to religiously to wash & style my hair so I get about 5-6 months out of the treatment (which makes it easier to justify spending so much). I’m already thinking in March I am due for my next!
P.S. This treatment is not to be confused with a Brazilian Blowout so don’t buy those $99 Groupons thinking it’s the same!! Read on to find out the difference..
What Is Keratin? It’s a protein that’s naturally in your hair.
How It Works: A stylist applies a keratin hair-straightening product to your hair and then uses the heat of a flat iron to seal it in. The process takes about 90 minutes or longer, depending on your hair’s length. Salon keratin products include Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola (which is the one I had done), Global Keratin Complex, the La-Brasiliana treatment, Brazilian Keratin Treatment.
Time-Saving Tresses: If you usually style your hair straight, a keratin hair-straightening treatment could shorten your blow-dry time by 40% to 60%.
Farewell, Frizz: You can forget about frizzy hair after treatment. You could walk out in moist or light rain and your hair won’t change.
Brazilian vs Keratin
Keratin is not a Brazilian blowout. They’re similar, but unlike some Brazilian treatments, the keratin treatment does not have formaldehyde in it. Note: I didn’t say it was completely chemical free but it doesn’t break the actual bonds of the hair the way the Brazilian might.
I know it’s confusing but go with Keratin, it rocks!
